Happy new year!
It’s a German tradition to watch a short movie called “Dinner for One” on New Year’s Eve. It’s a british theatre play which was recorded in 1961 in Hamburg. The main story is written in english but the introduction is German. Well, here is the translation:
Respected audience, dear Ladies and gentlemen,
Today we are at the manor of Miss Sophie. Due to discretion we won’t tell you the Last Name of this highly respected family.
Miss Sophie invited her four best friends to her birthday dinner and I will tell you today’s seating order: Miss Sophie will sit here, this seat is reserved for Sir Toby, Admiral von Schneider, Mr. Pommeroy here and over there Mr. Winterbottom.
Ladies and Gentlemen, unfortunately there is a tiny problem: Miss Sophie is not the youngest person alive. We’re celebrating her 90th birthday and her four friends already died in the last years. The last one’s funeral was 25 years ago. Anyway, Miss Sophie doesn’t want to forego her birthday party and because the men obviously can’t be there tonight, they will be played by her butler James. That worked quiet well the last years and it will also work out today because the itinerary of the dinner is the same for years. James will ask “Same procedure than last year?” and Miss Sophie will answer “Same procedure as every year”.
Well, the rest of the conversation between Miss Sophie and James is not really interesting. It’s not important at all. You will be easily able to follow this most unusual birthday dinner ever.
